Research was undertaken into tests for identifying hazardous aspects os secoundary and/or recycled component materials under a task of the safety and environment work package of the SAMARIS project. The use of secondary materials in road construction semms to be considered by some to be the preferred method for their disposal. Howewer, such materials need to undergo a wide range of investigations to check their suitability , from simple to extensive, because of the distict properties of the material at source.The overall aim of the task was to produce a methodology of testing alternative components for potentia hazards.

A procedure has been developed around two known hazardous component materials and four more general situations with suitable tests being identified to check for them.
