A test based upon Maximum Length Sequence (MLS) methods has been developed for the in-situ measurement of the sound absorption of porous road surfaces. This test is described in a draft ISO standard and allows a relatively large area of road surface to be examined over a wide frequency range without the need to extract core samples. In addition, because the signal to noise ratio is very high, valid roadside measurements in the presence of traffic can be realised. Currently these tests are carrie ...[more] |

Specimens of typical road aggregates were photographed, using a line scan camera system, before and after artificial polishing. Images of the aggregates in the different states of polish were examined automatically, by developing bespoke software, to assess if a change in the microtexture could be detected and linked to the measured change in friction on the specimen surface. The method for analysis, including masking of the image to isolate aggregate surfaces, and the algorithms that examine ch ...[more] |

A comprehensive study of the future risk of landslides in Scotland and the evidence that we require to properly plan for and manage that risk. The work presented gives Transport Scotland the means to apply appropriate management measures to the sites of highest risk on the trunk road network. ...[more] |

The ERA-NET ROAD project aims to list all what can go wrong when one uses a Low-noise pavement (LNP), to quantify in a neutral way and as precise as possible the probability and the impact of the risks and to make recommendations on how to deal with the risks. The analysis is based on the types of LNP used in the five ERA-NET ROAD countries participating in the project. This will allow decision makers in these and other countries to decide on a rational basis whether or not to use LNP in traffic ...[more] |

Review of research concerning the possible effects of Commercial Electronic Variable Message
Signs (CEVMS) used for outdoor advertising on driver safety. Such CEVMS displays are alternatively known as Electronic Billboards (EBB) and Digital Billboards (DBB). The report consists of an update of earlier published
work, a review of applicable research methods and techniques, recommendations for future research, and an extensive bibliography. The literature review update covers recent post-hoc cra ...[more] |

Bridge weigh-in-motion systems are based on the measurement of strain on a bridge and the use of the measurements to estimate the static weights of passing traffic loads. Traditionally, commercial systems employ a static algorithm and use the bridge influence line to infer static axle weights. This paper describes the experimental testing of an algorithm based on moving force identification theory. In this approach the bridge is dynamically modeled using the finite element method and an eigenval ...[more] |

The development of accurate codes for the design of bridges and the evaluation ofexisting structures requires adequate assessment of heavy traffic loading and also the dynamic interaction that may occur as this traffic traverses the structure. Current approaches generally first calculate characteristic static load effect and then apply an amplification factor to allow for dynamics. This neglects the significantly-reduced probability of both high static loading and high dynamic amplification occu ...[more] |

The objective of this project is to collect and deliver high quality road data primarily for the development of performance prediction models. The monitoring of the LTPP sections started in 1984 on commission of the Swedish Road Administration. The aim is primarily to focus on road deterioration caused by heavy traffic. The project started with a limited amount of sections but the number, both active and inactive, has increased to 655 sections distributed over 66 sites. Budget restrictions in 20 ...[more] |
